چکیده

We have recently used a multi-channel, imagefiltering model to study the development of visual selective attention in human infants (Schlesinger, Amso, & Johnson, 2007). In the current study, we employ the same model to simulate infants’ gaze patterns during a perceptual completion task. The model not only succeeds in capturing the gaze patterns produced by young infants, but also provides support for the idea that a single neural mechanism may help to account for changes in visual selective attention and perceptual completion during early infancy.

Simulating the role of visual selective attention during the development of perceptual completion.

We recently proposed a multi-channel, image-filtering model for simulating the development of visual selective attention in young infants (Schlesinger, Amso & Johnson, 2007). The model not only captures the performance of 3-month-olds on a visual search task, but also implicates two cortical regions that may play a role in the development of visual selective attention. In the current simulation...

Atypical Gaze Behavior in Children with High Functioning Autism During an Active Balance Task

Background. Unusual gaze behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was reported very early in the literature. Objectives. The current study examined gaze behavior in children with ASD and typically developing (TD) children while performing an active balance task on the Wii balance board. Methods: 8 children (male) diagnosed with high-functioning ASD and 9 TD children (3 female, ...

Development of perceptual completion originates in information acquisition.

Adults have little difficulty perceiving objects as complete despite occlusion, but newborn infants perceive moving partly occluded objects solely in terms of visible surfaces. The developmental mechanisms leading to perceptual completion have never been adequately explained. Here, the authors examine the potential contributions of oculomotor behavior and motion sensitivity to perceptual comple...

Where infants look when impossible things happen: simulating and testing a gaze-direction model

Schlesinger (2003, Adaptive Behavior, 11: 97–107) recently proposed a model of eye movements as a tool for investigating infants’ visual expectations. In the present study, this gazedirection model was evaluated by: (a) generating a set of predictions concerning how infants distribute their attention during possible and impossible events; and (b) testing these predictions in a replication of Ba...

Prediction-learning in infants as a mechanism for gaze control during object exploration

We are pursuing the hypothesis that visual exploration and learning in young infants is achieved by producing gaze-sample sequences that are sequentially predictable. Our recent analysis of infants' gaze patterns during image free-viewing (Schlesinger and Amso, 2013) provides support for this idea. In particular, this work demonstrates that infants' gaze samples are more easily learnable than t...
